Skin Care and non-surgical skin health procedures are the natural extension of our commitment to helping patients look their best. Our Skin Care is physician-directed with the goal of helping you have skin that is as healthy and young looking as it can be. We use products and procedures that are exclusively available through the offices of Physicians and Plastic Surgeons.

Our staff includes Skin Health Specialists, Cathy Oliva, RN and Amy Breimann. Read on or you can contact Skin Care now.

Our approach to skin health covers the three key areas of care—correction, maintenance and prevention. The services we offer include:

Is there a skin care solution for what's bothering you?

For many patients, we provide only Skin Care services. For some, these procedures and services are an integral part of a recommendation that also includes a facelift or facial cosmetic surgery. For others, our skin care services are a way of maximizing benefits after facial cosmetic surgery.

Skin Resurfacing

Fine lines (especially around the mouth and eyes), uneven pigmentation, areas of dryness, scarring or other skin damage—these problems can be addressed through skin resurfacing. All resurfacing techniques work in essentially the same way. The outer layer of damaged skin is stripped away. As healing begins, new skin cells form to create smooth, tight, younger-looking skin.

Skin resurfacing cannot remove excess skin or fat and is no substitute for a facelift, eyelid surgery or other cosmetic facial surgery. It does, however, do a wonderful job of minimizing fine lines, correcting uneven pigmentation and eliminating other surface signs of aging. Skin resurfacing can also help restore skin elasticity by penetrating to the dermis and stimulating collagen and elastin cells. These cells are the support structure of your skin and stimulating them creates a smoother, more youthful appearance.

There are several approaches to skin resurfacing and they vary in terms of intensity and results. The different techniques use specific chemicals. In general, a more aggressive procedure provides a better result but has a longer healing and recovery time. The resurfacing procedures offered at Center for Plastic Surgery are chemical peels, laser resurfacing and microdermabrasion.

Chemical Peels

These peels use a chemical solution to remove the damaged outer layer of skin. The type and strength of the chemical employed determines how quickly a peel produces results. A deeper peel yields benefits more quickly, but it requires a longer recovery time.

Chemical Peels improve or, in some cases, eliminate fine skin wrinkles caused by sun damage and restore some of the elasticity lost during the aging process. Chemical peels can restore some of the skin's elasticity by penetrating the dermis and microscopically tightening the elastin fibers. This gives the skin a smoother, more youthful appearance. There are many different kinds of peels-these are the most commonly used.

Alpha & Beta Hydroxy Peels are very light and are repeated several times to obtain the final result. These light peels have no downtime. They allow you to wear makeup immediately and to maintain your normal routine. At the Center for Plastic Surgery, we use BioMedic and Physicians Choice.

Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) Peels. TCA peels are medium depth peels which cause a more aggressive peeling. Healing takes seven to ten days. With slow acting TCA, the depth and intensity of the peel can be tailored to your individual needs. We use OBAGI Blue Peel and Accu Peel.

Laser Resurfacing

Laser Resurfacing is a surgical technique that, like chemical peels, removes the damaged outer layer of skin to create a smoother, younger look. Read more about the Center for Plastic Surgery's approach to laser resurfacing.

At the Center for Plastic Surgery, we use a microdermabrasion technique called Power Peel. It is a non-surgical procedure that removes the damaged outer layer of skin and encourages rejuvenation through the use of micro-crystals and a unique polishing tool.

BOTOX® Cosmetic

BOTOX® Cosmetic logo

BOTOX® Cosmetic is used to treat frown lines, crow's feet and lines on the forehead. A BOTOX® Cosmetic Injection usually requires only a quick office visit, but it can also be incorporated into a facelift or other facial cosmetic surgery procedure. BOTOX® Cosmetic is injected into the area to be treated and, as a result, the muscle weakens and the wrinkles soften-often disappearing altogether. BOTOX® Cosmetic injections are usually repeated every four to six months.

Fillers—Fat, Collagen, Dermalogen and Cymetra®

These fillers are commonly used to "plump" lips, fill out fine lip lines and treat the deep creases that run from the nose to the corners of your mouth. While each filler has a unique set of properties, fat has the distinct advantage of being harvested from the patient and so eliminating the possibility of an allergic reaction.

Physician-Directed Skin Care

The skin is a living organism-designed to restore itself, but the aging process interferes with the skin's ability to rejuvenate. The damage done by time and exposure to the environment show in many ways. You can see uneven pigmentation and age spots; fine lines and wrinkles on the face—especially around the eyes and mouth—and clogged pores which yield adult acne and dry flaky skin. We look at Skin Care as restoring, maximizing and maintaining skin health by stimulating the natural rejuvenation process.

Because we see Skin Care as an aspect of health care, we look for products that are developed in a scientific manner and that are laboratory tested. This means that ingredients, formulations and procedures are proven effective before they are offered as Skin Care solutions.

The framework for effectiveness is based on a solid scientific understanding of how the skin rejuvenates itself. The real transformation to healthy, glowing, young-looking skin happens well below the surface. Only skin care products designed to deliver ingredients to a therapeutic depth can truly promise younger looking skin. No conventional and department store skin care products, no matter how expensive, can deliver this deep penetration for ongoing skin health.

Some sunscreens give you a false sense of security. Find out why.

Customized Skin Care

While we tailor a program to an individual's needs, invariably we pursue the following objectives in any recommendation we make.

  • Maintaining the skin's natural pH
  • Encouraging the exfoliation of the top layer of damaged skin
  • Treating skin at the deep level of the dermis to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin cells
  • Protecting the skin with anti-oxidents and use of sunscreens that are clinically proven to provide true broad spectrum protection from both the burning UVB rays as well as UVA- the rays proven to be responsible for premature signs of aging
  • Moisturizing as needed

Endermologie Massage Treatment

Endermologie utilizes a scientific massage technique to enhance the figure, reduce the appearance of cellulite and improve skin tone. The key to Endermologie's effectiveness is the ES1 therapeutic massager. It combines two motorized rollers with powerful suction in a patented technique that lifts connective tissues, improves blood circulation and relieves muscle aches and pains. Invented in France, Endermologie works below the surface where connective tissues play an important role in maintaining the firm appearance of your skin. These tissues include collagen and elastin fibers, which can become less supple with age and lack of stimulation. Endermologie supplies the stimulation and circulation necessary to improve your appearance over time.
